1985 – UMM Alter I 4×4

The Metal-Mechanical Union (UMM) is a Portuguese metallurgical and automotive company.

It was founded in 1977, with the purpose of distributing and manufacturing 4x4 vehicles for agriculture, industry, and services, after purchasing from the French company Cournil, the licenses and marketing rights of the long Cournil, for the rest of the world.

The company achieved considerable success and managed to launch an original range of off-road models in various versions in Portugal and 45 countries.

The first models adopted the name of their creator, thus taking the designation UMM 4x4 Cournil, being available in three versions: the Tracteur, the Randonneur, and the Entrepreneur.

In 1982, UMM made its debut in the Paris-Algiers-Dakar rally.

3 UMMs started and 3 reached the finish, with José Megre leading the team. These UMMs debuted the Indenor 2.5L diesel engine, with 76hp.

In the following two years, UMM participated again in the same rally, with all of them reaching the finish.

In 1985, the production of the UMM Cournil 4x4 ended, and the Alter I was launched.
