1958 – Nash Metropolitan

This car comes from the partnership between the American NASH and the British AUSTIN and aimed to create an economical and compact car, very much in the English style, but with American design.

Several cars of this model came to Europe, and in the year 1957, more precisely on September 25, at 10:20 a.m., in front of the Fort of St. George, in Oitavos (Cascais), the ship “Hildebrand” ran aground with about 180 Nash Metropolitans on board. A famous scrap dealer from the Caneças region bought part of the cargo that was considered lost, having rescued to land about 300 meters using a system of cables and pulleys, 80 Nash Metropolitan cars, which remained next to the Fort of St. George for about 60 days waiting for the necessary documentation.

As for the ship, it stayed there for a long time, until the sea shattered it; its remains are scattered on the seabed between 8 and 12 meters deep, depending on the tide.
